Hey you, nice to see you here, for the Instagram Size Guide. Today I want to show you the different Instagram sizes that should have pictures and videos. For this I will give you a few tips which format is best for what. Do not worry, at first it looks like a lot, but anyone can succeed on Instagram!
Profile
We start with the profile, and here of course first with the size of the profile picture for Instagram. This will normally be displayed in the size 180x180px, on mobile devices it will be scaled down to 110x110px. It would be best to use an image with an aspect ratio of 1: 1 and a size of 180x180px up to 200x200px.
It is also possible to upload larger images, e.g. with 1000x1000px, these are of course scaled down. And again, as with any social network, the compression quality is determined by the reach of your profile. Small profiles get worse codecs than large profiles. So stay the best with a size of 180x180px to 200x200px for your profile picture.
For the texts there are also limitations, these are at the user name with 30 characters and in the description at 150 characters.
Picture Posts
For picture posts on Instagram there are the 3 basic formats
sizes Landscape, Square and Fullscreen. With the landscape format the aspect ratio is 1.77: 1 and the optimal size would be 1080x608px. With the Square Format the aspect ratio is 1: 1 and the optimal size would be 1080x1080px. The landscape aspect ratio is 9:16 and the optimal size would be 1080x1920px.
Video Posts
For video posts on Instagram, there are the 2 basic formats
sizes landscape and portrait. With the landscape format the aspect ratio is 1.77: 1 and the optimal size would be 1080x608px. When portrait format, the aspect ratio is 4: 5 and the optimal size would be 1080x1350px.
Stories
In the stories on Instagram you can vary between the landscape and the fullscreen formats in size. With the landscape format the aspect ratio is 1.77: 1 and the optimal size would be 1080x608px. For fullscreen format the aspect ratio is 9:16 and the optimal size would be 1080x1920px.
It is recommended to use the Portrait Format 4: 5 (1080x1350px) and the Fullscreen format. A story element can be 15 seconds long.
IGTV Posts
With IGTV posts on Instagram you can vary in size between the landscape and the fullscreen formats. The landscape aspect ratio is 16: 9 and the optimal size would be 1920x1080px. For fullscreen format the aspect ratio is 9:16 and the optimal size would be 1080x1920px.
The videos can have different maximum lengths depending on where they are uploaded:
- 15 minutes when uploading from a mobile device.
- 60 minutes while uploading from the web.
Only the file format mp4 is accepted. The videos should have a frame rate of at least 30 FPS (frames per second) and a resolution of at least 720 pixels. Videos up to 10 minutes long should not exceed 650 MB in size. Videos up to 60 minutes in length should be 3.6 GB in size.
